KDC donates a million dollar

Jamaican developer donates $1 million to Mico students

Four students from the Faculty of Science and Technology at Mico University College received a donation in the sum of $1 million to assist with their tuition fees from proud alumnus and owner of Kemtek Development Construction Limited, Sylvester Tulloch.

Tulloch has been giving back to Mico through this scholarship for the past five years, increasing his contribution from $500,000 to S1 million dedicated to the faculty of science and technology.

“There is a need for specialist teachers in the areas of Mathematics and Science and we felt that in giving scholarships, we would help students who wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise giving them an opportunity to address the nation’s shortage,” Tulloch said.

The recipients are a mixture of 2nd to 4th year students doing various specializations. They are Morni–Shae Kelly, Stephen Foster, Kenique Walker and Shanique Ffrench.

“This scholarship has helped me significantly, as I am from a single parent home and the only one of my siblings to have gone to College. Receiving this scholarship has enabled me to complete my third year and now my fourth year,” said Kelly, a 4th year biology student.

“I am very appreciative for this scholarship and it has encouraged me to give back to the College when I become a graduate.”

Foster, another recipient, stated, “now that I am able to complete my studies, I am planning to enroll in a masters degree programme whilst teaching in a school to then move on to lecturing Mathematics at a tertiary institution”

Tulloch, who graduated from the Mico University College in 1971, is encouraging all alumni to join the cause and give back.

“When I came to The Mico it set the basis for doing other things, it is the Mico that has set the base for my achievements. So whilst they all don’t have to give back in this way I encourage them to seek opportunities to give back to the institution that has helped to develop us,” he said.
